Our first contact with making hydrogen

1982 – 1983

It was in Eindhoven at the former HTS, now the University of Eindhoven. This is where we had to learn, during our Physics Mechanics lessons, how hydrogen is formed and/or how to produce it. After this I didn’t do much with this science.

Discovery of driving on hydrogen

On a business trip to America in 2007, I was waiting for my taxi. I noticed someone with a water bottle refilling a small tank in their trunk. I read on his rear window: This car is 30% more efficient by adding hydrogen!! I didn’t hesitate for a moment and approached the man and asked him if this really worked. To which he said “of course”. I immediately asked him if he would give me some explanation.

In the meantime, I had long understood what this gentleman did, but I still listened carefully to his experience and how he built the system into his car. I saw a fairly simple hydrogen cell, no bigger than my palm, with a tank of water next to it. He turned on the system, which released hydrogen and oxygen, which then went into the air intake of his engine, via a thin hose to the engine. My taxi had now arrived and I asked this gentleman if I could buy such a Cell through him. Emails exchanged, but still no Cell after six months.

Then I thought, wait a minute, I can build this myself based on what I learned in the 80s. After many experiments we have arrived at a working unit.
